In September, Ethereum announced it completed "the merge," with many now asking what comes next.
On September 15, 2022, Ethereum completed its long anticipated “merge,” finally launching Ethereum 2.0. Ethereum is “the community-run technology powering the cryptocurrency ether (ETH) and thousands of decentralized applications” through blockchain technology. Ethereum continues to be the second-most valuable cryptocurrency by market cap since the start of 2018, after Bitcoin.
The merge was Ethereum’s shift from a proof-of-work to proof-of-stake concept (more on this in a bit). The shift was huge for several reasons. Most notably, in my opinion, is that the shift marks a massive milestone in what is probably the largest and most challenging open-source project ever undertaken.
